Berlin Underground Cabaret presents a photographic record of an unexpected troupe of dedicated performers, young women whose dedication and attention to detail I observed to be almost obsessive, as they drove themselves relentlessly toward perfection through the throbbing music, performing inside a cube of light that was always cool to the touch, disclosing themselves instinctively to their audience in a repetitive ritual of barely suppressed ecstasy. These performers are not incidental subjects, but participants in an intensive practice, day after day and for hours at a time, of self-refinement and perfection. This project treats the camera not as a neutral witness but as part of the apparatus itself, attempting to capture the raw glamour of their self-discipline and perfectionism at the peak of the scene.
